Answers to some frequently asked GSG questions

Do Gliders Make Good Pets?

Yes and no.  It depends entirely on you.

  • Gliders adapt well to people and develop strong relational bonds with their owners.  However, gliders can live 12 years in captivity.  They are a long-term commitment, not a part time hobby.  If you have the time, want an animal that is small and will become your best friend, then a glider is for you.
  • If you expect to be a world traveler, if you are rarely home, or if it seems there are already not enough hours in the day, then a glider is most likely not for you.

Do Sugar Gliders Make good pets for Kids?

Gliders require some special attention and generally require a little more responsibility than young children can give.  Gliders for a family with young children are wonderful as long as Mom or Dad are overseeing the care and handling. If you are considering a glider for a child (even a teenager) it is imperative the child is very responsible and is willing and able to make a long-term commitment

Are sugar gliders legal?

Legality differs from state to state.  Sugar gliders are legal in most, but not all 50 states.

How much do Sugar Gliders Cost?

Hand tame joeys are $225.  $375 if you purchase a pair

Do Sugar Gliders smell?

The main odor given off by gliders is the usual waste smell, but it's not strong at all and if their cage is kept clean, you will never smell anything. I should mention here, however, that the males do give off an odor before mating. While not really bad, it is a distinct odor. Gliders are very dependent upon their excellent senses of smell to identify other gliders, as well as their owners.

Can sugar gliders be "potty" trained?

Everything you read would suggest that gliders cannot be trained.  However, we have a customer that really was able to train their glider to go in a litter box!  We have not tried this ourselves but we will be more than happy to share their secret if you drop us an email and ask.

That being said, when a glider first wakes up, they exit their sleep quarters and proceed to do their duty.  If you wait 5 minutes before letting them out of the cage, you'll be all set.

What noises do Sugar Gliders make?

Gliders make 3 distinct noises:

Barking: If you picture a 5" small puppy barking, you get a pretty good visual on this sound. Your glider is playful and wanting attention.
Crabbing: This sound can best be described as a mini chainsaw idling. usually made when a glider is disturbed or bothered.
Hissing: Your glider is scared and trying to scare off what is bothering it. This sound is usually accompanied with the glider gearing up on its hind legs and opening its arms wide to present itself as big as possible.

Should I keep more than one Sugar Glider?

It is preferable to keep more than one glider together. In the wild, gliders are community animals and they seem to be much healthier and happier while in groups in captivity. Gliders readily adapt to one another's presence and will quickly become best of friends.  If the pair are young, there should be no problems.  However, there are precautions to take when introducing two older gliders together.  The cage and all accessories should be thoroughly cleaned beforehand to remove any scent.

How important is it to get more than one glider?

This depends almost entirely on how much time your (and your family/household members) will be spending with the Sugar Glider and the emotional makeup of your glider. Gliders are social animals and need interaction or they can grow lonely, get depressed, and even become sick. People that spend a minimum of two hours a day or more interacting with a single glider out side of the cage normally have wonderful healthy and happy single gliders. If you can't dedicate at least that much time with your glider on a consistent basis may want to think about getting a pair to keep each other company.

Will Sugar Gliders get along with other pets?

Gliders have practically no fear of any land-dwelling creature. However, be cautious. Our golden retriever gets along great with our gliders.  Our gliders will actually hop on and go for Brady rides!  We have also heard of cats co-mingling with gliders.  Just remember all pets have their own dispositions and each case is different.  Use judgement when introducing other pets to gliders.

Can Sugar Gliders have free roam of your house?

Gliders can roam the house but should never be left unattended. They can and will chew on some furniture and love to climb up drapes. They can be left out of their cage, they just need to be watched. When a glider tires of being out of their cage they will generally return on their own.  GLIDERS CANNOT SWIM so be wary of open water and toilets (men, pay particular attention!)

Do I need a License to own a Sugar Glider?

It is not necessary in most states to have a permit or license to have a sugar glider as a pet. It is necessary to have a Federal United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) license in order to breed, sell, or broker gliders. Be sure whomever you get a glider from is properly licensed.  This ensures your new pet is healthy and not cross-bred.  USDA licensed breeders are subject to annual, unannounced inspections of their breeding facility by a USDA inspector. In addition, it is a USDA requirement to have the facility and breeders inspected and tested annually by a licensed veterinarian.

Do gliders need shots?

No

Do you need a license to breed Sugar Gliders?

Yes. Gliders are classified as exotic pets and require a USDA license to breed legally.

Do you ship gliders?

Sorry but we do not ship our gliders.  We feel it is a traumatic experience  for joeys to travel extended lengths/times/get bounced around in a cargo hold...
