SPECIAL ALERT:
It has been brought to our attention that a Florida company is
selling joeys at malls in the local area. Although we solely focus
on our customers and our business and we generally do
not criticize others, we are compelled to enlighten
prospective glider owners of a few things that we find disturbing about
them:
- The cages that they sell with
their gliders are extremely small. Gliders are arboreal and can
spend their entire lives in trees. We recommend a minimum
cage height of 3' to give them plenty of room to jump around
- They include a heater rock
with their starter. Although we have not seen their joeys, this
would indicate that their joeys are too small
to be seperated from their mom and not properly weaned.
- The practice they show on
their website to "de-pee and de-pop" their gliders is entirely
inaccurate. When a glider is taken out of their pouch it is a
simple practice to let them hang out inside the cage for 5
minutes or so before handling them. The first thing they do when
they wake is to "do their business". There is no need to pin them
down and wipe their private areas with a wet rag.
- They sell a 2 year supply
of pellets with their gliders and mention "that is all they
need". Although this is true, imagine if you had no choice in food
except Ramen noodles day after day after day. It would get pretty
boring. Food is not only a source of nourishment for gliders,
it is also a source of entertainment. We recommend a
three-part daily diet to include fresh water, a fruit or vegetable
source, and a protein source. If anyone has any questions regarding a
healthy glider diet, please feel free to contact us for further
information.
- The most disturbing thing we
saw on their website was a training video to discourage biting.
They recommend sticking your thumb deep in their mouth to
make biting as uncomfortable as possible. First, in our
opinion this borders on cruelty to animals but more importantly, this
shows that their gliders see limited human interaction before they are
taken away from their parents and shipped off to their new owners. Our
gliders are handled every day starting with the first day they
open their eyes. By the time they are released to their new homes
they are entirely acclimated to the human touch and do not bite.
If anyone purchases
gliders at a home show and has any problems, questions, or
comments, please feel free to contact us. We are here to educate and
help in any way possible.
Thanks... Don, Tina, and Chris !
